The UK trade body for vetted roofing contractors. Last reviewed April 2026 by the TradeMatch editorial team.
NFRC (National Federation of Roofing Contractors) is the largest UK roofing trade association, founded in 1894. Membership requires proof of trading history, financial stability, technical competence and current insurance. NFRC operates the Approved Contractor scheme — the strongest tier — which adds independent site audits and customer references. NFRC is also a TrustMark scheme operator, so NFRC members are automatically TrustMark-registered for roofing work. The federation also operates the RoofCERT scheme, an individual roofer accreditation that complements the company-level NFRC membership.

NFRC covers all roofing trades — pitched roofing (slate, tile, metal), flat roofing (felt, EPDM, GRP, single-ply), traditional craft roofing (lead, copper, zinc) and roof systems. It does NOT cover guttering or roof-line work as a primary speciality (though most roofers do guttering as adjunct work). NFRC does not certify scaffold (CISRS / NASC) or specific solar-PV installation (MCS).
100%of TradeMatch payments held in escrow
Every job, every payment, every time. Funds held in a segregated client account until you sign off the work.
TradeMatch escrow operates through FCA-regulated payment providers. Customer funds are segregated from operating accounts and protected under UK consumer law.

Standard NFRC members have passed the entry vetting (financial stability, trading history, references). Approved Contractor members have additionally been independently audited at recent jobs. For any major roofing project (£3,000+), insist on Approved Contractor.
New pitched roof: 10-25 years for materials (manufacturer warranty), plus 10 years workmanship from an NFRC member. Flat roof: 10-25 years materials, 10 years workmanship. Always get the warranty in writing AND ask whether it is insurance-backed (IBG).
Many NFRC members offer emergency call-outs but it is not part of NFRC certification per se. For storm damage, use an NFRC member where possible — non-vetted "storm-chaser" trades aggressive door-knocking after big storms have caused significant homeowner-loss issues historically.
CompetentRoofer is the Building Regulations competent-person scheme for refurbishment of pitched / flat roofs (replaces the Building Notice route). Many NFRC members are also CompetentRoofer registered. For new structural roof work, both certifications matter; for like-for-like repairs, neither is legally required.
Lapsed accreditations are the most common silent failure on UK trade hires — registrations expire annually and not every trader updates their listing. Always verify the NFRC number on the public register on the day you sign, not at first meeting. On TradeMatch, every NFRC-registered tradesperson is independently re-checked before they can quote on your job, and the registration link is shown on their profile so you can confirm yourself.
Up to 5 quotes from UK tradespeople — every NFRC-relevant member independently verified by TradeMatch. Escrow-protected payments. Reviews tied to completed jobs only.
