The legal register every UK gas engineer must be on. Last reviewed April 2026 by the TradeMatch editorial team.
Gas Safe Register is the official list of engineers legally allowed to work on gas appliances in the UK, the Isle of Man and Guernsey. It replaced CORGI in April 2009 and operates under contract from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Hiring an unregistered engineer for any gas work — boiler, hob, oven, fire — is illegal under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. The penalties land on the engineer, but the homeowner carries the safety risk: incorrectly installed gas equipment is the leading cause of UK carbon-monoxide fatalities tied to home appliances.

Gas Safe registration covers natural gas, LPG and CO checks. Each registered engineer carries a photo ID card listing the specific gas categories they are competent in — a domestic boiler installer is not automatically certified for commercial catering equipment, for instance. Always check the back of the card. Registration must be renewed annually and engineers can be removed from the register for unsafe work. Gas Safe does not cover oil heating (that is OFTEC) or solid fuel (HETAS).

Yes for any gas-carrying connection or appliance commissioning. You may legally turn appliances on/off and clean them, but anything connecting, disconnecting or modifying gas pipework requires a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Visit gassaferegister.co.uk and enter the licence number from their photo ID card. The register confirms the engineer is in date and shows the gas categories they are certified in. Always check before work starts, not after.
Gas Safe replaced CORGI in 2009 as the legally-required UK gas register. CORGI now operates as a voluntary trade association for additional standards but is no longer the legal scheme. Only Gas Safe registration is legally valid for UK gas work.
No. Oil-fired heating equipment falls under OFTEC. Solid fuel and biomass appliances fall under HETAS. Gas Safe is for natural gas and LPG only.
Lapsed accreditations are the most common silent failure on UK trade hires — registrations expire annually and not every trader updates their listing. Always verify the Gas Safe number on the public register on the day you sign, not at first meeting. On TradeMatch, every Gas Safe-registered tradesperson is independently re-checked before they can quote on your job, and the registration link is shown on their profile so you can confirm yourself.
Up to 5 quotes from UK tradespeople — every Gas Safe-relevant member independently verified by TradeMatch. Escrow-protected payments. Reviews tied to completed jobs only.
