Bark.com runs ads constantly. It's also one of the most-complained-about platforms in UK home-improvement. Trustpilot sits below 1.5 stars, Reddit threads are merciless and the BBC has covered the credit-pack model more than once. Here's what's really going on, where Bark works, and where homeowners walk away.
A £15 lead that's been sold to four other trades, may not match the service area, and frequently turns out to be a tyre-kick. The cost gets recovered in your quote.

Compare TradeMatch vs Bark
Bark sells leads to professionals as 'credits'. A single homeowner request can be sold to 5+ professionals, each paying between £2 and £20+ to respond. The homeowner sees this as 'fast quotes'. The professional sees a £15 charge for a lead that's already been sold to four others, may not match their actual service area, and frequently turns out to be a tyre-kick. Trades spend hundreds in a slow week trying to get a single conversion. The cost has to be recovered somewhere — and it's recovered in the quotes you receive.
Bark is a horizontal marketplace — wedding photographers, dog walkers, accountants, life coaches and tradespeople in the same product. Vetting is therefore generic: identity check, basic profile review. Trade-specific qualification verification (Gas Safe, NICEIC, Part P) isn't standard. Skilled trades often don't bother listing because the leads aren't pre-qualified for trade work and the fees are punishing. Result: many of the responses you receive come from less-established operators or from trades operating well outside their normal patch.
For non-trade services with low risk and fast turnaround — finding a function-band, a wedding videographer, a removals quote — Bark works. The match is rough, the response time is genuinely quick, and the stakes are low enough that the credit-pack inefficiency doesn't ruin the experience. It's home-improvement work, where vetting and accountability matter most, where the model breaks.
TradeMatch is trade-only. Every professional is verified for the specific qualifications that matter for that trade — Gas Safe for gas engineers, NICEIC for electricians, Part P registration, public liability insurance, ID and background. Quotes are limited to up to 5 per job (not 5+ paying competitors fighting over one customer). Trades pay nothing to quote — only a small commission on confirmed work — so there's no recovered overhead in your price. And every payment is escrow-held with dispute mediation, so a bad outcome doesn't end at 'sue them'.

No life coaches, no wedding bands. Every professional is vetted for the specific UK trade qualifications that matter for the work.
Trades quote for free. Only pay a commission once the job is confirmed and underway. Removes the inflated-price feedback loop.
Capped competition keeps each trade interested enough to write a real quote rather than a copy-paste. You compare like-for-like.
Your money is safe until you sign off. Disputes go through TradeMatch — not chargeback courts.
Bark is not fraudulent — it is a real lead-generation marketplace. The "scam" perception comes from the asymmetric value proposition: tradespeople pay for leads that often don't convert, and homeowners receive quotes from trades whose costs are inflated to recover those lead fees. Both sides feel they got a worse deal than expected.
Tradespeople pay £2–£20+ per lead-credit and have to absorb the cost of the leads that don't convert. To stay profitable, that overhead is added back into the quotes that do close. A typical Bark quote for a £500 plumbing job has £40–£80 of lead-cost recovery built in.
Bark has no role in your payment to the tradesperson — they sell leads, not job protection. Any refund is between you and the trade. If the trade refuses, your only recourse is bank chargeback, Section 75 (credit card) or small-claims court.
Vetting is identity-only and not specialised by trade. Gas Safe, NICEIC and other trade-specific qualifications are not verified by Bark. The trade may display them in their profile but Bark does not check.
For UK home improvement, TradeMatch is the trade-specific alternative — pay nothing to quote, escrow on every payment, verified Gas Safe / NICEIC / Part P, and capped competition. See the side-by-side at /compare/tradematch-vs-bark.
